Polymarket Expands Presence with LaLiga, Major Step Forward
Prediction markets are not only securing investment from leading financial institutions, nor are they simply fighting back legal challenges - they are embedding themselves in the mainstream
LaLiga, one of the world’s largest soccer leagues and organizations, let alone its most accomplished, has signed a new partnership with Polymarket, a globe-trotting yes/no prediction market platform, which has stirred fan excitement as much as regulatory concerns.
LaLiga Pioneers First European Sports League Partnership with Polymarket
Polymarket arrives in one of the world’s premier soccer nations at a crucial time when gambling partnerships are coming under scrutiny, with prediction markets that offer event contracts on sports positioning themselves as a worthwhile alternative.
“Our goal is to give fans a more expressive way to follow the game, where opinions on players, matches, and season outcomes can be reflected in real time. Partnering with LaLiga brings that level of interaction to one of the most passionate global fanbases and introduces a new, more dynamic way for North American audiences to engage with the league,” Polymarket CEO and Founder Shayne Coplan said, commenting on the latest opportunity.
The partnership will feature several core pillars, including premium broadcast visibility and various programming that will be focused on driving stronger fan experiences, including VIP match hospitality and virtual meet-ups with LaLiga insiders, including past and present league players.
The partnerships will also focus squarely on ensuring that sports integrity is preserved, as Polymarket has previously come under fire over seeing trades that suggested insider trading on geopolitical events, specifically, somewhat attributed to suspected moles inside Israeli and US armed forces and political elites. These allegations have never been proven.
Effectively, LaLiga is now the first European major sports league partner for the company, which has already announced and secured partnerships with a number of American top-flight sports leagues, including Major League Baseball, the National Hockey League, Major League Soccer, and the Ultimate Fighting Championship.
Gambling advertising matters, and prediction markets need to tread lightly
In places like the United Kingdom, where gambling sponsorships are ending, prediction markets could offer a chance to ailing clubs to secure additional funding opportunities, although it’s not clear if the vertical won’t come under scrutiny for being too close to gambling, an argument that yes/no platforms have continuously refuted.
Spain, too, has overly restrictive gambling ad rules and enforces them without compromise.
