Online Gambling Influencers Disrupt Charity Drive

Photographer Steve Williams has become a well-known community figure in Los Angeles’ Skid Row thanks to his nearly two decades of charity work. His foundation primarily organizes events to distribute food and other essentials and to reassure those in need that they are not alone. However, a recent disruption at an outreach event showed the dark side of online gambling influencers.

The Disruption May Have Been Intentional

As volunteers were halfway through serving more than 300 meals, two young men carrying large quantities of alcohol entered the area. According to eyewitnesses, the individuals began distributing vodka bottles and smaller whiskey containers to the people waiting in line. The reaction from Williams was immediate as he confronted the pair and asked them to leave.

Williams recalled the event in a recent X post, saying that the two men’s actions directly contradicted the event’s purpose. He explained that distributing alcohol in a neighborhood where residents fight addiction every day was deeply harmful. Williams insisted the focus remain on essentials: food, clothing, and long-term support that could help disadvantaged people to get back on their feet.

According to reports regarding the incident, the two men may not have been simply misguided and may have had an ulterior motive. One of them wore recording glasses and reportedly referenced the crypto gambling platform Rainbet during the conversation. While his exact explanation was difficult to make out, people at the scene understood that the men were filming online content that could potentially be monetized.

Online Casino Promotions Are Becoming Increasingly Contentious

The incident’s alleged ties to online gambling immediately changed how people view the disruption. What may have once been considered a show of poor judgment may have been a staged interaction exploiting vulnerable people to generate publicity. While the two men eventually left, Williams was deeply frustrated, arguing that the issue extends beyond a single disrupted event.

The connection to gambling could be especially problematic. Platforms like Rainbet operate primarily through digital channels, often relying on influencers and streaming personalities to expand their reach. Their branding may appear in unexpected places, scattered throughout online videos and live broadcasts.

Earlier this month, Rainbet’s logo appeared in livestream overlays of the Netflix documentary Louis Theroux: The Manosphere. The placements were subtle but noticeable, raising concerns about potential gambling harm. This new incident raises more questions as online creators blur the line between charity, spectacle, and promotion. For Williams and his team, the episode was a reminder of how easily their work can be undermined.
