NZ Opens Door to Regulated Online Casino Market

New Zealand is gearing up to bring online casino gambling under local control. While Kiwis have long used offshore sites, the government is now pushing for regulation to better protect players, reduce gambling harm, and crack down on shady operators. 

In preparation to overhaul its approach to online gambling, the country’s Department of Internal Affairs (DIA) is inviting international casino operators to register their interest in participating in the new regulated market.

Early Engagement, a Must

In a statement released Monday, Trina Lowry, who heads the Online Gambling Implementation (OGI) Program, emphasized the importance of early engagement with prospective license holders as the government moves toward legalizing and regulating online casino gaming.

“For online casino operators interested in entering the New Zealand market, the most important thing you can do is register your interest at www.dia.govt.nz/OGI,” said Lowry.

The DIA team, which is responsible for developing the new online gambling laws, will draft the bill, consult with experts and the public, and make player safety and industry fairness a priority.

They’re also looking forward to hearing from potential operators early on to build a system that works well not just for the government, but for the businesses that want to be part of it.

Lowry noted the goal is to build a system that’s “clear, efficient and supportive” to new entrants, and said two-way communication will be key to understanding what resources and guidance potential operators need.

“To help us achieve this, we want to engage with operators to understand what information would be most helpful as the process unfolds and understand their experience and needs.”, she added. 

While the legislation development is still underway, the OGI team will connect to global regulators to help shape how the system will work in practice. Once the law is passed, they’ll take the lead in implementing the new rules.

Up to 15 Licenses Available

The government plans to offer up to 15 licenses through a competitive process once the Online Gambling Bill is passed. To qualify, applicants will have to meet tough rules focused on keeping players safe and promoting responsible gaming.

Right now, most online casino action in New Zealand happens on unregulated offshore sites, which don’t provide much protection for players, the DIA pointed out.

“Online casino gambling is not new in New Zealand. Every day, New Zealanders gamble on a variety of offshore gambling websites,” the Department stated. 

“Regulating this sector will help protect consumers, minimise gambling harm, and provide regulatory oversight of online casino gambling providers operating in New Zealand.”The DIA is encouraging operators to register early and watch its informational video, which outlines how they can best engage with regulators as the framework continues to take shape.
