New York GGR Increases in August, Following an Unexciting Summer
The August results suggest that the New York casino and sports betting industry is beginning to experience the usual post-summer rise
The New York State Gaming Commission (NYSGC) has published its revenue report for August, highlighting statistics about the performance of the local gaming industry.
Sports Betting Experienced Significant Growth
According to the NYSGC’s official report, the state’s total sports betting handle for August reached $2.04 billion, marking the first time gaming in the Empire State has surpassed the $2 billion mark since May.
The figure resulted in mobile sports betting gross gaming revenue (GGR) of $178.2 million for the period. This was notably one of the weaker GGR results for 2025, official data shows.
On a year-to-date basis, New York’s mobile wagering industry has so far recorded $9.5 billion in handle, as well as $982 million in GGR.
FanDuel kept its place as New York’s top dog in terms of betting. The company singlehandedly reached $67 million in GGR, followed by DraftKings with $62.3 million. However, both DraftKings and Fanatics surpassed FanDuel in terms of wagering handle, reporting $579.6 million and $566 million in bets. FanDuel’s handle, on the other hand, stood at $562 million.
The Casino Industry Reached Its Peak for 2025
Meanwhile, the casino industry continued to experience growth as casino GGR increased by 4.7% year-on-year, reaching $65 million. This figure was underpinned by an increase in slot games and electronic table games revenue, the NYSGC reported. For reference, the Slots & ETC vertical reached $47 million for the period.
At the same time, table games experienced a slump of 4.2%, with revenue reaching $16.5 million. Despite the year-on-year decline, August’s table games results were the strongest for 2025, both in terms of table game drop and revenue.
The August results suggest that the New York casino and sports betting industry is beginning to experience the usual post-summer rise. In July, for example, New York gaming hit its lowest point for the past 12 months.
Caesars’ Times Square Casino Plan Divides New Yorkers
In the meantime, officials continue to heatedly discuss Caesars Entertainment’s plans for a Times Square casino. The proposal has been very divisive, with some suggesting that it will benefit the area and others expressing concerns about possible problems like more crime and human trafficking that could affect how people live there.
