New Study Highlights Rising Number of Problem Gamblers in Botswana
The study found that over a third of Botswana’s population engages in gambling across both regulated and unregulated platforms, with 6.7% of gamblers displaying excessive or problem gambling behavior

Botswana’s Gambling Authority has published the findings of its National Study on Excessive and Problem Gambling Prevalence, highlighting that individuals aged 21 to 35 are the most vulnerable to problem gambling.
Report Finds Concerning Trends in Botswana Gambling Scene
The report, commissioned by the Ministry of Trade and Entrepreneurship, was officially released on July 18, 2025, during a high-level stakeholder meeting at the AVANI Gaborone Resort and Casino. During the event, Hon. Tiroeaone Ntsima, Botswana’s Minister of Trade and Entrepreneurship, called for urgent and effective action to tackle the growing problem of gambling-related harm in the country.
He emphasized that the report being unveiled was more than just statistics, describing it as a reflection of the real lives and families impacted by excessive gambling. Ntsima also stressed the need for swift and decisive action. He warned that online and illegal gambling platforms present serious dangers, especially to young people, as they exploit their vulnerabilities and lack safeguards to prevent addiction.
The Study Highlights Concerning Trends
The study found that over a third of Botswana’s population engages in gambling across both regulated and unregulated platforms, with 6.7% of gamblers displaying excessive or problem gambling behavior. This rate increases to 12% among those who use illegal gambling sites. It also identified unemployment and financial stress as the primary factors contributing to problem gambling among individuals aged 21 to 35. Additionally, the study revealed that more than 20% of gamblers began gambling before reaching the legal age of 21.
What the Government Plans to Do
While the recent study highlighted concerning numbers, the Ministry already has a plan to deal with the issue. During the event, Ntsima presented a comprehensive government strategy to tackle gambling-related harm. Key measures include a strengthened crackdown on illegal online gambling, public education campaigns targeting schools and communities, expanded access to counseling and support services, and the introduction of youth entrepreneurship initiatives. Licensed gambling operators will also face tighter regulations and accountability requirements, including the implementation of responsible gambling features and mandatory staff training. Speaking of which, last year saw Botswana’s gambling scene grow significantly as the Gambling Authority issued multiple licenses to promote the industry’s development in the country.
Ntsima emphasized that the goal is not to eliminate gambling altogether, but to create a safe and responsible gambling environment, one that does not exploit individuals facing financial or emotional difficulties.
