In mid-December, a stabbing in Las Vegas occurred with one fatality. When police arrived, they found the stabbing victim grievously injured and bleeding. Unfortunately, later the victim passed away at UMC hospital from his wounds.
A Report by the Clark County coroner shows the identity of the deceased as Joseph Kirkling, 53 years old. The location of the incident is north of downtown Las Vegas. Arrest reports name one Kenwoon Montgomery as the perpetrator. Neither he nor the victim knew each other.
Montgomery was informed of the charges being brought against him on his first court appearance with the Las Vegas Justice Court. He is facing one count of open murder and two counts of assault with a deadly weapon.
Police Response
Lt. Robert Price with LVMPD stated that police officers had been dispatched to the scene after multiple calls of a man with a knife chasing people. After that, they received a separate report that someone had been stabbed.
On-site police that several people had managed to capture and disarm the assailant. After discovering the bleeding out victim, he was transported to UMC, where he tragically lost his life.
The Incident
During interrogation, the assailant told officers he had gotten high off of “sherm” after getting drunk. The “Sherm” is a drug that can function as a hallucinogen. Montgomery told investigators that he and his mother had argued at her house.
A police briefing released the same day explains how he had appeared at his mother’s already erratic home and had started beating on the door.
When the mother opened the door, Montgomery started slashing at her with a knife, after which she began to yell and beg for her life.
Montgomery’s brother heard the commotion and rushed to help, only for the knife to be swung at him.
Following this, the brother ran away to the street. While chasing him, Montgomery’s attention fell on an unsuspecting person, and he attacked him.
According to the perpetrator, Kirkland had supposedly begun to swing at him. Additionally, he claims that he had stabbed him in self-defense.
