The University of Mississippi will establish a new research center focused on gambling patterns among college students. Approved by the Mississippi Institutions of Higher Learning Board of Trustees, the new Center on Collegiate Gambling will begin operations later this year with a budget of about $700,000.

Researchers involved with the project note that new data is sorely needed. Legal sports betting has expanded rapidly across the United States, and young adults may be especially vulnerable to potential harm. Access to gambling platforms is easier than ever, and early findings from surveys conducted by university staff suggest the issue is already widespread.

Nearly 40% of students reported some form of gambling activity over the past year, with some even displaying activity that matches problem gambling patterns. Beyond data collection, the center will develop prevention programs, offering support resources, and advise lawmakers on potential policy changes. The aim is not only to understand the problem, but to shape how it is addressed.

Harm Prevention Must Keep Up with Market Realities

Broader policy shifts in Mississippi are already underway. Recently proposed legislation would require casinos to check significant winnings and deduct child support payments from a winner’s total if such exist. The legislation focuses on high-value wins such as jackpots. Supporters argue the measure would ensure that financial responsibilities are met when significant sums are involved.

Mississippi is also intensifying its efforts against black market operators. The state’s regulator regularly sends cease-and-desist letters to unlicensed platforms offering games of chance and sports betting products without the necessary permits. Such operators are often based overseas and lack fundamental consumer protections and safeguards to prevent harm.

Academic and legislative efforts indicate that the state is gradually adapting to modern developments. The shift is especially pronounced for universities. Students now carry betting platforms in their pockets, blurring the line between casual engagement and problematic use. Creating a dedicated research facility demonstrates increasing awareness that existing strategies will not suffice for future needs.
