Man Who Got into Gambling at 17 Lost More than $4.2M

Having lost millions of dollars, the man decided to turn his life around in 2022 when he reached out to a popular support service

A young man from the United Kingdom spiralled into gambling addiction after he first came into contact with the activity as a teenager.

The then-17-year-old started by betting on match fixtures, with his habit escalating, and small wins in the dozens or thousands of dollars immediately fueling his behavior until it was too late.

Sliding into Gambling Addiction, and a Message of Hope

The gambling websites he got started with back in the day had no age verification and allowed him to simply gamble. Eventually, the man would lose an estimated $4.2 million by wagering on sports gambling websites, and specifically on soccer.

On occasion, he would also spend $40,000 or more per night on betting, with the negative impact of gambling quickly piling on. The man, who is now in his late 20s and identified as JJ Glanville, has said that his experience with gambling has had a pronounced impact on his physical and mental health and has led to isolation and depression.

The man is still bouncing back from his gambling addiction when he started his recovery in 2022 after reaching out to Gamblers Anonymous, and received help from his family to help him get his life under control.

While Glanville managed to win some money and funded an extravagant lifestyle on occasion, he mostly continued to spiral into debt prior to his wake-up call and decision to turn his life around.

He has likened the experience to “being possessed” and admitted that he had difficulty cashing out any winnings, reinvesting most of it back into gambling.

“What I’m trying to do now is inspire people and help them get out of that hole,” Glanville said, hoping that his story will reach other people who are in a similarly difficult position and looking to overcome their dependency on compulsive gambling.
