Magnus Carlsen Speaks Positively About the Future of Chess Betting

One of the biggest names in modern chess, Magnus Carlsen, is urging chess tournament organizers to adopt faster-paced formats in order to increase interest in betting on matches.

Carlsen Wants to See Betting on Chess Be More Developed

Appearing at a conference at the Next Summit Valletta 2025, the five-time World Chess Champion spoke favorably of betting on chess. In fact, Carlsen explained that he is personally quite interested in the idea and would also like to see it being implemented, as he thinks it has a lot of potential. Carlsen is well-acquainted with the gambling world, having collaborated with operators such as Unibet and BETBY, and even appearing at the World Series of Poker due to his passion for poker.

Betting in chess is definitely something I’m personally interested in. And I think it has potential that’s been largely untapped. So definitely quite interesting. And it’s something that they are talking about.

However, the 34-year-old chess grandmaster explained that sportsbooks might want to consider a different chess format for betting. According to him, tournament organizers should explore faster-paced gameplay formats that are more conducive to live betting. Carlsen explained that in the past, with more traditional chess matches, it was easier to exploit good players, leading to somewhat unbalanced matches. This has led to less interesting matches, which have not been as interesting for potential bettors. In addition, the grandmaster said organizers should make more fast-paced and action-packed formats to maintain interest.

Chess betting wasn’t the only gambling-related discussion that Carlsen took part in. During the panel, he was asked what he thinks about his partnership with BETBY, how he signed a deal with the company in the first place, and what he hopes to achieve with this partnership.

He explained that the experience has been very positive so far. He said that he and his father had a few early meetings where he was introduced to BETBY and got to know the team. After several months of discussions, they eventually reached an agreement.
