Lucky Massachusetts Player Wins $25M from a Scratch Game
The most recent $25 million award marks the largest lottery prize claimed in Massachusetts so far in 2026
One lucky lottery player from Massachusetts just won the largest lottery prize so far in 2026 from “$25,000,000 Mega Money,” a popular $50 scratch ticket game in the state. However, the recipient of the reward, who bought their ticket at the Cumberland Farms in Turners Falls, a village of Montague, has yet to be revealed.
Winer Claims Prize Money Through a Representative
Instead of the winner coming forward to claim their prize, the jackpot was handled by Open Door Trust of Boston, represented by trustee Renat Lumpau. Lumpau chose to take the winner’s prize as a lump-sum payment of $16.25 million before taxes. Meanwhile, the store at 10 Montague City Rd. in Turners Falls will receive a $50,000 bonus for selling the winning ticket.
Interestingly, Massachusetts does not generally permit lottery winners to stay anonymous, but there is still a way it can happen. The Massachusetts Lottery allows winners to form a trust, as was the case in this instance. A trustee can then submit the winning ticket, collect the check, and deposit the funds into a bank account established in the beneficiary’s name.
According to Mark William Bracken, executive director of the Massachusetts State Lottery, only the identity of the trustee or legal representative is made public. He also noted that in recent years there has been an increase in the number of large prizes claimed through trusts.
It’s Been a Busy Few Months for the Massachusetts Lottery
The last couple of months have been quite busy regarding lotteries in Massachusetts. The most recent $25 million award marks the largest lottery prize claimed in Massachusetts so far in 2026. However, the second-largest prize this year was $5 million, won from a “$5,000,000 100X Cashword 2024” ticket sold at a Mobil gas station in Uxbridge and claimed on January 20.
Additionally, a $1 million prize was also claimed Thursday from a winning “$2,000,000 50X Cashword 2024” ticket purchased at Sids Smoke Shop in Boston. Furthermore, a $250,000 prize was claimed from a “$250,000 Winter Winnings” ticket sold at a Speedway in Spencer, while another winner collected $100,000 from a “$15,000,000 Colossal Millions” ticket purchased at Pine Tree Market in Chelmsford.
But state legislators have also been busy with various gambling bills these past few weeks, with some of them being stuck in prolonged talks as deadlines are quickly approaching this month.
