Jim Ananich Becomes New Chair of Michigan Gaming Control Board
Ananich is taking on the responsibility, serving as board chair alongside four other current board members
Michigan Gaming Control Board executive director Henry Williams revealed that the state’s governor has appointed Jim Ananich as the new chair of the regulator.
Governor Appoints New Michigan Gaming Control Board Chair
Ananich’s tenure is effective from April 25, 2025, and he is replacing Linda Forte, whose term has expired. Ananich will serve a term ending on December 31, 2028, representing the Democratic Party on the Board. His appointment is pending approval by the Michigan Senate through its advice and consent process.
Director Henry Williams thanked Linda Forte for her steady leadership and dedicated service over the past several years. He explained that her leadership has been crucial in adapting to the changing gaming landscape and strengthening the MGCB’s dedication to responsible gaming.
Now, Ananich is taking on that responsibility, serving as board chair alongside current Board members Joni M. Thrower Davis, Andrew T. Palms, Mark Evenson, and Deidre A. Lambert-Bounds. The Board consists of five Michigan residents appointed by the Governor, with one member designated as the chairperson. As the Michigan Gaming Control & Revenue Act outlines, no more than three members can be from the same political party. To conduct official business, the Board must have a quorum of at least three members.
Who Is Jim Ananich?
Ananich, hailing from Flint, started his professional journey as a high school social studies teacher. He earned a bachelor’s degree in political economy from Michigan State University and a master’s degree in educational administration and supervision from the University of Michigan. Additionally, he is a member of the Advisory Board for the National Kidney Foundation of Michigan.
Ananich currently serves as president and chief executive officer of the Greater Flint Health Coalition and is a lecturer in state and local government at the University of Michigan-Flint. His previous roles include Michigan Senate Minority Leader, State Representative, and President of the Flint City Council.
The Michigan Gaming Control Board‘s next public meeting, which will also be Ananich’s first, will be held at 9:30 am on Tuesday, May 13, 2025, at Cadillac Place in Detroit.
