Jake Paul Taking on Gervonta Davis Puts Him at Disadvantage, Oddsmakers Say

Jake Paul’s career in boxing started as a bit of a publicity stunt, but through rigorous training, the YouTuber-slash-entrepreneur-slash-boxer is now taking on a very serious opponent

Jake Paul did not win much praise for his fight against Mike Tyson. While the bout was a record-breaker in every possible way, controversies persisted until the very first gong hit, and sometimes after.

Jake Paul Takes on First Serious Boxing Opponent, Oddsmakers Not Backing Him

Jake Paul, though, has not let that slow him down, and he has certainly known a thing or two about bad publicity. Regardless, the fighter is now taking on undefeated WBA lightweight champ Gervonta “Tank” Davis, and oddsmakers have already made up their mind – Jake Paul is the underdog.

This is not surprising at all, as Davis is the first highly professional opponent that the Betr founder is taking on. Jake Paul has been all business since the fight was locked in for November 14, arguing that he acknowledged Davis’ superiority, calling him one of the “top pound-for-pound boxers in the world.”

Despite his Internet-chosen name, “Problem Child,” Jake Paul’s boxing career has hardly ever been about bragging or gloating over opponents. He has proven to be incredibly professional, and at odds with his early-day online persona.

As Jake Paul has gotten more business-like, not least thanks to his Betr venture, he has also taken boxing as a serious challenge and one that he wishes to build upon. Jake Paul is posted at +140 against Davis’ -180, which means that the difference between the two fighters significantly backs the WBA champion.

40% Chances of Success Against a Highly-Trained and Experienced Fighter

Although the underdog is posted at about a 40%-win chance, Jake Paul has suggested that he finds his odds good. He also has some advantages up his sleeve – notably, his reach is 8.5” better. He is also much taller than his opponent, by 8”, and this too will play a role.

However, there is the issue of experience. Davis is not some undefined talent that is yet to be tested. He has gone 30-0-1 and he has won with 28 knockouts, and a 93% finish rate. This is a formidable record for any boxer and should give Jake Paul a lot to think about when approaching the ring.

Jake Paul has won 12 out of 13 fights, but the issue is that he hasn’t had quite the same list of opponents as Davis. The newly-fledged boxer is hoping that he can skip dozens of worthwhile opponents by taking on the man who defeated them all, but whether this is possible remains to be seen – on November 14.
