Hundreds of Turkish Soccer Officials Placed Unauthorized Wagers

Turkey, like most countries, has strict prohibitions on the participation of insiders in wagering, making the widespread adoption of sports betting among officials especially concerning

Turkey’s soccer sector is being shaken amid an ongoing insider betting scandal involving hundreds of match officials. While some had merely dabbled in wagering, others turned out to be extremely avid bettors.

Many Officials Dabbled in Sports Betting

Speaking at a media conference in Istanbul, Ibrahim Ethem Haciosmanoglu, president of the Turkish soccer federation, provided further insights into the matter and harshly criticized those who broke the rules.

While Haciosmanoglu did not name the violators, he said that a recent five-year investigation showed that a staggering 371 out of 571 match officials had betting accounts. To make matters worse, 152 of those were regular players, investigators found out.

Haciosmanoglu further clarified that the list of violators included 7 referees, 15 assistant referees, 36 classified referees, and 94 assistants.

As it turned out, many had merely tried out betting, placing no more than a single wager. A few dozen, however, were extremely prolific bettors, with 42 having been found guilty of placing wagers on more than 1,000 soccer games. The most outstanding case was one official who had placed a whopping 18,227 bets.

A Chance for a Fresh Start for Turkish Soccer

Turkey, like most countries, has strict prohibitions on the participation of insiders in wagering, making the widespread adoption of sports betting among officials especially concerning. As a result, he said that the officials in question will be held accountable and handed appropriate penalties.

Haciosmanoglu firmly stated that the future of Turkish soccer depends on “cleaning up the dirt.”

The findings were welcomed by several major soccer clubs, which praised the opportunity to clean the soccer sector and restore public trust in the Turkish soccer scene. Prominent soccer pundits, on the other hand, encouraged officials to suspend league matches until the investigation is complete. Some encouraged officials to bring in foreign referees.

Many hope that, disappointing as it is, the current development will mark a fresh start, leading to an era where Turkish soccer is no longer embroiled in controversy.

There might be some adverse effects too, as some suggested that innocent referees may now be unduly scrutinized due to their colleagues’ misdeeds. Worse still, the current scandal is likely to undermine global trust in Turkish soccer for a long time.
