Drunken Bally’s Twin River Casino Romp Ends Badly for Police Detective
The man has been suspended without pay after appearing heavily inebriated at the casino and threatening to “kill everybody,” prompting a swift response from the PPD
An off-duty detective ended up embroiled in a career-damaging scandal at the Bally’s Twin River Casino, leading to personal and professional repercussions for the law enforcement veteran.
According to local media Target 12, which operates under WPRI, detective Gary Slater visited the property last October, when he got heavily inebriated and began exhibiting signs of aggression.
Police Officer Insults Casino Staffers, Fellow Law Enforcement
An employee told the media, which investigated the incident, that Slater “wanted to kill everybody.” Slater was accompanied by family members at the time of the incident, who also tried to de-escalate the situation.
The detective was threatening staff, witnesses said, and he refused to sign an eviction notice. The casino has banned him permanently since the incident took place, while fellow police officers had to be called in to secure the rowdy customer.
Professional camerawork did not stop Slater from swearing at the police officers who had come to secure him, asking them questions such as “how many gun arrests do you have” and burbbling that “they” were “zeros,” without specifying whom he meant.
No Criminal Charges, But Behavior Inconsistent with Moral and Ethical Codes
In a video seen by the media, Slater and the arresting police officers are heard exchanging several phrases. Slater denigrated his fellow officers by suggesting that they had not had the same career success as he had – “twenty-seven years,” he shouted in the video showing his arrest.
The police officers who were conducting the arrest simply stated that their colleague was a “disgrace to the badge.”
Slater was eventually suspended at the end of a long investigation, which did not bring criminal charges against him, but rather argued that he had been taken away as part of “protective custody.”
However, Slater will not receive pay while his suspension lasts. He has also enrolled in a treatment program.
