DraftKings to Give Back Over $3M to Connecticut Users

The Connecticut Department of Consumer Protection investigated DraftKings’ promotions from October 19, 2021, to January 4, 2023, involving deposit matches and bonuses that officials say were not clearly explained to customers

DraftKings has agreed to return more than $3 million to thousands of its Connecticut customers after a state-led probe uncovered problems with the company’s marketing tactics. The deal follows the Department of Consumer Protection (DCP) starting a review of promotional campaigns run by the sports betting and online casino operator.

DraftKings to Refund 7,000+ Customers After Connecticut Bonus Promotion Probe

The probe centered on promotions offered between October 19, 2021, and January 4, 2023. These deals included incentives like deposit matches and bonuses that, state officials say, were not always explained to participants. The agreement means more than 7,000 customers can get refunds.

Connecticut officials stressed that bonus terms must be shown to customers. They noted that many users did not know or were confused about the specific rules linked to the bonus offers, including betting requirements to get rewards.

As part of the deal, DraftKings will give refunds and start yearly training for its Connecticut-based marketing and ad staff to make sure they follow state rules from now on. The company has also promised to push its learning resources, like game guides and information on how bonuses work.

The agreement also says DraftKings must pay $50,000 to help solve customer complaints, boost customer education, and back efforts to enforce gaming laws.

Connecticut Officials Praise DCP Efforts as DraftKings Prepares Customer Refunds

Bryan T. Cafferelli, Commissioner of the DCP, was happy with the result. He said it makes sure affected customers get their money back while supporting fair gaming practices in the state. He applauded the DCP’s Gaming Division for its work to help consumers.

Kris Gilman, Director of the Gaming Division, highlighted how crucial honest ads are in the gaming industry. He mentioned that DraftKings has agreed to look at its marketing plans again and take action to stop similar problems in the future.

DraftKings plans to notify customers eligible for refunds in the next two months. Users with active accounts might see refunds appear in their accounts. State officials also caution residents to watch out for potential scams, as crooks might pretend to be DraftKings staff to steal personal data.

Right now, DraftKings and FanDuel have licenses to run online casinos in Connecticut. Officials urge residents with questions about gambling ads or promotions to reach out to the DCP’s Gaming Division for help.
