Crown Perth Was Found Suitable to Hold a Casino License
Racing and Gaming Minister Paul Papalia was very pleased with how far Crown Perth has come since it was originally found unsuitable to hold a license

Crown Perth has been found suitable to hold a casino license in Perth, marking a significant regulatory achievement for its parent company, Crown Resorts.
Crown Resorts Will Retain Its License with No Further Penalties
Just like competitor The Star Entertainment Group, Crown Resorts has been involved in its own fair share of regulatory controversies. In 2022, Crown Perth was deemed unsuitable to hold a license due to a variety of regulatory violations. However, Crown has succeeded in overcoming many of these hurdles, as proven by the latest regulatory decision.
Not long after an assessment by the Independent Monitor and the Gaming and Wagering Commission of Western Australia (GWC), Racing and Gaming Minister Paul Papalia announced that Crown Perth was a suitable license holder, which means that no further punitive action will be taken.
The decision demonstrated Crown’s strong remediation efforts that have seen the company introduce major changes to its leadership and policies. The Western Australian government praised the significant AML and CTF improvements, which played a key role in its decision to name Crown Perth a suitable licensee.
It has now been determined that Crown Perth has been overhauled through a refreshed corporate and governance structure, enhanced employee screening and training models to promote ethical behaviours as well as actions to minimise gambling harm.
WA Government
In the meantime, former Independent Monitor Paul Steel has been appointed to the GWC and will continue to monitor Crown Perth from August 1, 2025.
Minister Papalia Hailed Crown Perth’s Remediation Efforts
Racing and Gaming Minister Paul Papalia was very pleased with how far Crown Perth has come since it was originally found unsuitable to hold a license.
Today I can confirm we won’t be taking punitive action against Crown Perth, as it is now deemed a suitable entity to continue holding a gaming licence under the Casino Control Act 1984.
Racing and Gaming Minister Paul Papalia
Papalia added that the GWC will continue to oversee Crown Perth’s business to ensure that the remediated activities remain effective.
Speaking of the GWC, the regulator’s chairman, Gary Dreibergs, vowed to continue monitoring Crown Perth’s business to ensure that the licensee operates responsibly, lawfully and in the Australian state’s best interest.
The Commission emphasises that, while suitability has been demonstrated, sustained cultural change and long-term commitment to reforms are essential. We will continue to monitor Crown Perth’s efforts to reduce gambling harm and uphold public trust.
Gary Dreibergs, chair, GWC
Dreibergs added that the public relies on Crown Perth to maintain its current course and continue to do better.
