Casino Crime Update: From Robbery to Gambling Rings
Recent cases highlighted the broad specter of casino-related crime and the relentless efforts by authorities to ensure the perpetrators are held accountable

New spikes of casino-related crimes across the USA have highlighted issues ranging from violent robberies and fatal shootings to fraud and illegal gambling operations. Some of the recent cases further shaped the ongoing discussions on casino security and law enforcement efforts as more US states consider legalizing gambling.
Casino Crime Can Vary in Severity
A tragic incident unfolded in West Memphis, Arkansas, as a person was fatally shot in the Southland Casino parking lot on 8 November. The West Memphis Police Department said it was an isolated incident that did not pose a threat to other patrons and casino employees. Authorities are currently investigating the incident, but they have not revealed the victim’s name. The shooter remains at large.

Meanwhile, Vegas police recorded progress regarding a case from February this year when a man, identified as 43-year-old Z.Z., reportedly assaulted and robbed a tourist in the parking garage at Treasure Island Hotel on the Las Vegas Strip. Z.Z. allegedly used a handgun to assault the tourist and fled with cash, credit cards, and other personal items.
A recent KLAS report revealed the suspect fled to California, but swift communication led to his arrest by the California Highway Patrol. Despite swift actions by authorities, inter-state law enforcement policies meant he was moved to Clark County Detention Center several months later, on 19 October. Z.Z.’s preliminary hearing is scheduled for 4 November.
Illegal Gambling Remains a Pressing Concern
In another case, Oakland police arrested four suspects last week in connection with an alleged illegal gambling operation in East Oakland. Police raided the 1400 block of 17th Avenue off International Boulevard on 17 October and found several illegal casino gaming machines within the premises. They recovered an unknown amount of cash, three firearms, ammunition, and different kinds of drugs. Four individuals were taken into police custody within the premises.
A long-running illegal gambling operation in Nassau County, New York, culminated in the indictment of five men accused of running a sophisticated online sports betting ring. The investigation, which identified 75-year-old A.F. and 59-year-old A.P., reportedly involved wiretaps and surveillance over 14 months.
Prosecutors stated the illegal gambling ring facilitated hundreds of bets, with one bettor alone accumulating over $150,000 in debt. The accused are now facing charges related to the promotion of gambling, usury, and conspiracy. If found guilty, group members could face potential prison sentences of up to 15 years.
