Casino at Nemacolin Lets Go 140 Staff, Citing “Long-Term Stability”

Considering the Casino at Nemacolin underwent quite a large renovation in the past couple of years, it might seem rather strange that it has seen such a downturn in visitor numbers to warrant a large employee layoff

The Casino at Nemacolin, part of the Nemacolin Woodlands Resort in Farmington, Pennsylvania, has laid off more than 140 employees recently, citing “long-term stability” as the reason for this drastic move.

Casino at Nemacolin Lays Off 140 Employees

In an official statement, the casino explained that the decision to reduce the workforce followed a comprehensive review of its operations. The decision was also driven by changes in available room inventory that have materially impacted guest volume and operational demand. Thus, the casino said staffing levels in certain areas have to be realigned to meet the changes in business needs.

In making this decision, the company applied consistent criteria in accordance with its policies and evaluated multiple operational factors, the statement further said. While difficult, these adjustments are intended to position Nemacolin for long-term stability, it argued. The Casino at Nemacolin extended its sincere appreciation to all associates for their dedication and service.

However, this might not be of much consolation to the laid off employees. One of them said that they were called into a “mandatory meeting” where severance packages were already waiting for them. These packages allegedly varied from 12 weeks to a mere two weeks.

The Casino at Nemacolin Records Slow Growth Despite Renovations

Considering the Casino at Nemacolin underwent quite a large renovation in the past couple of years, it might seem rather strange that it has seen such a downturn in visitor numbers to warrant a large employee layoff. However, according to a Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board financial report from July of last year, the Casino at Nemacolin remained at the bottom of the state’s revenue chart. Despite that, it still recorded some growth and is expected to generate $26.2 million in revenue this fiscal year.

The casino’s renovations included the addition of almost 100 rooms and a year-round pool with cabanas and an entertainment stage. Additionally, the casino reconfigured its gaming floor, modernized its entrance, and added a dedicated high-roller area. Furthermore, the casino expanded operations to a seven-day-a-week schedule by opening on Mondays and Tuesdays.

For the more adventurous quests of the casino and resort, there’s the Bleu Room – a special dining option hidden in a secret door of the hotel. The site’s golf course also now offers expert instructors, club-fitting specialists, and state-of-the-art athletic technology for those wanting a more outdoor experience.
