California’s AG Determined to Go After DFS

Bonta has been repeatedly hammering gaming platforms that he has proclaimed to be legal, threatening further action

California Attorney General Rob Bonta has been on a war path against prediction markets, sweepstakes, and online fantasy sports platforms, with his office now threatening to take legal action against platforms that it deems illegal.

Speaking to KCRA 3, Bonta said that following up on his previous public opinion, he is now moving to muster the necessary resources and enforce the law.

While California’s lawmakers and governor have disagreed with Bonta, he is now determined to deliver on the opinion he originally introduced on July 3, 2025, and which he is set to maintain. Details on what this enforcement action may look like are still missing.

Bonta also explained that his decision to release a legal opinion on the matter did not stem from some intentional malice against the sector. He had been asked to weigh in, he clarified.

“It’s our duty, not our discretion, but we are mandated, we shall respond and provide an opinion as appropriately requested under the law,” Bonta added, explaining the responsibilities of his office and his position.

Going after DFS platforms would mean that DraftKings and FanDuel could have to close shop in the state. The two companies have been providing DFS services in many states that do not formally regulate traditional sports betting.

DFS Platforms on the Chopping Block

Bonta is not alone in agreeing that DFS platforms have to go, with tribal leaders and gaming operators backing the AG’s opinion. Critics have pointed out that the California Nations Indian Gaming Association has donated to Bonta’s political career over the years and that the AG is influenced by this.

A logical next step – if Bonta is looking to enforce his decision – would be to issue cease-and-desist letters to any DFS operators that may remain in California.
