BHA Confirms Brant Dunshea as Permanent CEO, Names David Jones Interim Chair

Jones’ appointment as interim chair follows the resignation of Lord Charles Allen

The British Horseracing Authority (BHA) announced two changes to its leadership, including the appointment of Brant Dunshea as permanent CEO and the appointment of David Jones as interim chair following Lord Charles Allen’s exit. The Betting & Gaming Council (BGC) commented on Allen’s departure, thanking him for his contributions to the broader industry.

BHA Appoints Dunshea as Its CEO

In its announcement, the BHA said that Brant Dunshea has been named as permanent CEO following his prior appointment on an interim basis. Brant assumed the role in December 2024, shortly after BHA’s ex-CEO, Julie Harrington, announced her exit.

According to the BHA, Dunshea is an industry veteran who has held several senior positions at the authority since joining in March 2015. Before his appointment as interim CEO, he served as the body’s chief regulatory officer.

Dunshea commented on his permanent appointment, saying that he is delighted to be named CEO of the organization.

It is a huge privilege to be given this opportunity to lead such a knowledgeable and dedicated team at a time of great opportunity for British racing.

The appointee also addressed the state of British racing, acknowledging that the horseracing sector is experiencing certain setbacks, but saying that the headwinds haven’t stopped it from making significant progress in preserving the sport’s health.

Dunshea was furthermore pleased with the success of the Axe The Racing Tax campaign, which managed to secure an exemption for the sport from the recent tax hike.

BHA member organizations were pleased with the appointment and said that this brings “welcome stability” to the association.

Jones Becomes Interim Chair for the Second Time

In the meantime, the BHA also approved the appointment of David Jones as interim chair after Lord Charles Allen resigned on March 3. This is notably the second time Jones has assumed this role, as he also filled the position for several months between Joe Saumarez’s exit and Lord Allen’s formal joining.

The BHA confirmed that it has initiated steps for the recruitment of a permanent chair.

Jones commented on his appointment, saying that the industry must now work together to protect the sport amid disagreements around governance reform. Because of that, he said that he hopes the appointment of a permanent chair will not take long.

BGC Wishes Lord Charles Allen All the Best

The BGC commented on the change, thanking Allen for his contributions to the industry during his short term as chair and wishing him well in future endeavors.

Although he was only in the role for a short period, he took on the position at an important time for British racing and brought with him considerable experience and a clear desire to help the sport navigate its challenges.

BGC statement

The BGC added that it remains committed to working “closely and constructively” with the BHA to ensure a thriving future for British racing.
