Shohei Ohtani’s Millions Unveiled in Dark Path Through Underground Gambling
The elaborate scheme allegedly implicated Ippei Mizuhara, previously Ohtani's interpreter, who faces accusations of siphoning a massive $16 million from the baseball star to support his gambling addiction

A recent revelation has shed light on a complex web of illicit financial transactions involving Los Angeles Dodgers player Shohei Ohtani’s funds and the world of underground gambling. According to sources with insider knowledge, millions of dollars allegedly stolen from Ohtani’s accounts were funneled through a California bookmaker and eventually found their way to Las Vegas casinos.
Ohtani’s Interpreter Accused in $16M Gambling Scandal
The intricate scheme reportedly involved Ippei Mizuhara, Ohtani’s former interpreter, who stands accused of embezzling a staggering $16 million from the baseball star to fuel his gambling habit. The money, transferred in increments of $500,000, was channeled to an illegal bookmaking operation run by Matthew Bowyer, a prominent figure in the California gambling scene.
Bowyer, known for his high-stakes gambling ventures, allegedly frequented renowned Las Vegas establishments like Resorts World. Sources claim that Mizuhara’s payments to Bowyer’s associate were used to settle gambling debts accrued at these casinos as reported by ESPN. The process involved converting the funds into playing chips, which were subsequently cashed out to compensate the bookie.
The revelations have drawn the attention of federal authorities, who have been conducting a widespread investigation into illegal sports bookmaking operations across Southern California and their ties to Las Vegas casinos. So far, twelve individuals have faced charges or convictions in connection with the probe, while two Las Vegas casinos have agreed to pay fines.
Resorts World, one of the implicated casinos, has remained tight-lipped about the ongoing investigation, stating only that it is cooperating with authorities. The establishment, which opened its doors in 2021, has come under scrutiny due to its alleged involvement in facilitating the laundering of proceeds from illicit gambling activities.
Key Figures in Ohtani Scandal: Former Presidents and Seasoned Bookmakers
The scandal has also implicated Scott Sibella, the former president of Resorts World and ex-president of MGM Grand. Sibella, who pleaded guilty to charges related to failure to report suspicious activity during his tenure at MGM Grand, was reportedly involved in similar infractions at Resorts World, leading to his dismissal in September.
Meanwhile, Bowyer, a seasoned bookmaker with a history of association with casinos, has found himself at the center of the controversy. Despite his ban from several Las Vegas establishments in the past, Bowyer’s operations continued, drawing in clients like Mizuhara, whose substantial gambling debts have underscored the extent of the illicit activities.
Despite the turmoil caused by Ippei Mizuhara’s gambling scandal, Shohei Ohtani continues to excel with the support of the Los Angeles Dodgers, showcasing outstanding performance in recent games.
Dodgers manager Dave Roberts praised Ohtani’s unparalleled talent and noted his increased engagement with the team since the controversy surfaced, suggesting that the ordeal has helped Ohtani focus. Ohtani expressed gratitude for the support of his teammates and staff amidst the situation, highlighting his improved English skills and strengthened bond with the team.
