Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs Could Emerge as Key Witness in Tupac Murder Case

The defense thinks Combs’ testimony could support their claim that the defendant’s past remarks were invented in pursuit of publicity and personal advantage

The long-running investigation into the Las Vegas killing of Tupac Shakur may soon draw another famous name back into public view. Defense lawyers for the only man charged in the case are considering calling Sean “Diddy” Combs to testify.

Davis Pushes New Strategy, Hopes Diddy Can Undermine Old Admissions

The potential move comes as Duane “Keefe D” Davis awaits trial in Nevada over the 1996 drive-by shooting. Davis is trying to challenge the credibility of his own past admissions. Prosecutors argue that Davis acknowledged involvement in the killing over many years. The defense now contends those statements were made up to gain attention and personal benefits, as reported by the New York Post.

According to people familiar with the defense strategy, Davis’ legal team believes testimony from Combs could strengthen that argument. Their reasoning is that if Combs rejects claims that he ever offered money to arrange Shakur’s death, it would help portray Davis as someone who exaggerated or invented his story.

Davis has alleged that Combs put forward a large cash reward to target Shakur and his associate Suge Knight during the height of a bitter rivalry between East and West Coast rap figures. Combs has denied any connection to the attack.

Celebrity Testimony Could Shape Jury View in Tupac Case

Defense lawyers are said to see a well-known figure disputing Davis’ earlier claims as having potential persuasion on jurors. Legal observers note that testimony from a celebrity — even one facing his own legal troubles — could have an influence on how a jury interprets the reliability of Davis’ prior interviews and public comments.

However, bringing Combs into the case is far from certain. Even if subpoenaed, a witness cannot be compelled to waive constitutional protections, meaning he could decline to answer questions that might expose him to legal risk. Beyond this, the prosecution has not indicated that it plans to pursue theories linking Combs to the shooting.

Shakur was wounded in a September 1996 attack near the Las Vegas Strip and died days later in the hospital, a killing that remained unsolved for decades. Davis was arrested in 2023 after authorities said long-standing public statements and interviews provided enough evidence to file charges.

The trial is scheduled to begin later this year, though delays could push proceedings into 2027. Davis, who has been in custody while awaiting trial, has indicated through his attorney that he hopes to secure release on bail and clear his name.If the defense succeeds in bringing Combs into the courtroom, the case could once again draw intense attention to one of hip-hop’s most notorious unsolved crimes and could reshape how jurors view the only man charged in it.
