MGM Resorts Expands Environmental Commitments via Renewable Energy Deal

MGM Resorts International is doubling down on sustainability via a new agreement with Escape Solar LLC. According to the announcement, the deal will double the casino and hospitality giant’s access to clean solar electricity.
MGM Pens a New Sustainable Energy Deal
The agreement is in line with MGM’s ongoing sustainability efforts and was described as an “extraordinary stride toward a greener future.” The company hopes to procure 100% renewable electricity in North America by 2030, cementing itself not only as a casino and hospitality leader but also as one of the global leaders in sustainability.
MGM Resorts already boasts the world’s largest direct connect solar array in the hospitality industry and uses solar power for 90% of its daytime needs at 11 of its Las Vegas Strip properties. The new 25-year agreement with Escape Solar will amplify the company’s renewable energy capabilities, allowing it to cover 100% of the aforementioned properties’ daytime needs.
Additionally, a new Escape Solar + battery storage will allow MGM to extend the use of renewable power into the late afternoon and early evening hours. The Escape Solar + Storage project will be operated by Estuary Power and is set to be constructed in Lincoln County, Nevada. It will combine a 115 MW solar facility with a cutting-edge 100 MW/400MWh battery storage system.
The new facility is set to produce renewable electricity equivalent to the annual power usage of 28,000 American homes. Escape Solar + is expected to start operation in early 2026.
MGM Targets a Greener Future
Bill Hornbuckle, MGM Resorts’ president and chief operating officer, commented on the agreement, calling it “the next step” in MGM’s climate goals. He reiterated the company’s commitment to sourcing 100% of its electricity in NA from renewable sources by 2030.

Estuary Power’s CEO, Jill Daniel, expressed excitement about the opportunity to support MGM’s renewable energy objectives. The CEO added that the purchase will reduce carbon emissions by a whopping 250K metric tons a year.
In addition, Escape will generate substantial economic benefits for Lincoln County, Nevada as the first utility scale solar project in the county and will create over 250 well-paying construction jobs.

MGM made additional strides toward a greener future in 2023 and set out to reduce carbon its emissions per square foot by 45% by 2025.
