Mexico Proposes Evening Curfew for Gambling Ads

A federal deputy from Mexico is looking to restrict gambling ads on television after 10:30 pm, aiming to protect minors and stop creating “distorted expectations about money”

Federal deputy Jerico Abramo Masso from Mexico is determined to limit late-night gambling ads on TV, in a new attempt to enhance protection for children and families.

His new bill is aimed at stopping casinos and sports betting companies from promoting their services during what lawmakers call “family viewing hours.”

Misleading and Risky

Masso pointed out that betting and online casino ads are now heavily featured during live sporting events on both free-to-air and subscription channels

“Children are exposed to messages that frame gambling as a quick route to financial success,” he said. “This is misleading and risks creating distorted expectations about money.”

Under the proposed legislation, gambling ads would be restricted to air only after 10:30 pm, a time when fewer minors are likely to be watching.

The rule would apply to all broadcasts, whether on open television or subscription services. Operators could continue promoting their products, but only outside the designated family-friendly window.

The proposal has been sent to the Chamber of Deputies’ board of directors and will next go through committee review. Lawmakers may make changes to the text before it reaches the full chamber for debate and a potential vote.

Advertising for gambling products already requires prior clearance from the Secretariat of the Interior, with campaigns forced to follow responsible gambling standards and avoid targeting minors. Masso’s curfew would add another layer of protection by limiting the times when such ads can appear.

Broader Push in the Country

The initiative comes as part of a broader push to tighten oversight of Mexico’s gambling sector. The country’s Tax Administration Service recently issued new rules aimed at online betting platforms, live betting services, and online casinos

The updated guidelines also cover ATMs used in gaming transactions. According to regulators, all changes are meant to improve transparency, better handle the money laundering issue, and guarantee taxes are collected the right way.

Plus, the 2026 federal fiscal plan raised the Special Tax on Production and Services for gambling from 30% to 50% of turnover, squeezing margins and adding to the financial strain on operators.
