Malta Gambling Regulator Says It Has Nothing to Do with Illegal Site

Online casinos and sportsbooks on the Internet that operate outside the law are often prone to claim otherwise

The Malta Gaming Authority, the country’s gambling regulator, which issues internationally recognized gambling licenses, has made a statement distancing itself from a website that claimed to hold a Maltese gaming license.

This, the watchdog said, was not true, and accused the website – phlove dot org – of falsely claiming that it had been approved by the website. The watchdog found itself compelled to act after finding out that the operator had made the statements. In a statement, the regulator said:

“The gaming regulatory framework obliges authorised persons to comply with strict legal requirements in the interest of consumers. The activities of unlicensed entities are unregulated and do not provide the necessary safeguards.”

MGA

The MGA explained that the watchdog did not guarantee that players who choose to play on the website would benefit from the same protections usually granted to consumers who visit regulated websites.

The watchdog has not been the only regulator to go after non-compliant or offshore gambling sites, with the Kansspelautoriteit – the Dutch gambling regulator – similarly targeting websites that have not been complying.

In May, the MGA also went after OddsFly, revoking the company’s license over years of unpaid fees.
