LA Chargers vs. Detroit Lions 2025 Hall of Fame Odds, Time, and Prediction

Neither Chargers nor Lions have had much success in the Hall of Fame game. The Chargers took part in the pre-season spectacle two times in the past, both of which were during their San Diego days. The Lions played three times in the Hall of Fame game, losing twice and winning once, back in 1991.

LA Chargers Defense Looking Good, Offense Not So Much
With Derwin James (safety) and Khalil Mack (linebacker), the Los Angeles Chargers defense has looked great over the last couple of seasons. Heading into the 2025 pre-season, the team has activated Elijah Molden (safety), who spent most of the last season out with an injury (broken fibula).
This offseason, the Chargers added even more muscle to their front line, signing Da’Shawn Hand (defensive end) and Naquan Jones (nose tackle), as well as rookie Jamaree Caldwell (nose tackle).

They’ve got plenty of options in the defense, but what about their offense? While they have one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL today – Justin Herbert – the rest of the offensive team doesn’t look that great. This goes especially for their receivers.
Star wide receiver Mike Williams has decided to retire (somewhat shockingly), so they’re now in a rush to find a replacement. That might not happen before the 2025 Hall of Fame game, which is why all eyes will be on guys like Quentin Johnston, Tre Harris, and Ladd McConkey.
Johnston is notorious for dropping passes, so Harris and/or McConkey might get more time on the field. Either way, the Chargers do not have an elite option on the receiving end – and this could be a big problem against Detroit.
Hall of Fame Odds (Slightly) Favoring Detroit Lions
ESPN analysts ranked the Lions’ roster the third best in the NFL, mostly thanks to their running back tandem in Jahmyr Gibbs and David Montgomery. Together, they’ve piled up nearly 6,000 yards and 57 TDs in the last two years.

Detroit’s passing game is elite as well, with quarterback Jared Goff expected to have one of his best seasons ever. To help him achieve this feat, the Lions’ receivers Amon‑Ra St. Brown and Jameson Williams need to keep on doing pretty much the same as last season. Tight end Sam LaPorta is in his third year at Detroit, so we expect him to be even better than in 2024.
Obviously, their offense is fantastic, but what about their defense? While we think they’ve got some holes to patch, it shouldn’t worry them much against the Chargers in the Hall of Fame game.
Last season, Detroit’s passing defense surrendered a hefty 259 passing yards per game, which was among the worst in the league. However, they yielded only 6.5 yards per attempt and allowed just 12.2 yards per completion. In simple terms, this means that they tend to do well on short and medium-range throws.
However, long throws can be a problem for them. They can, but they probably won’t be much of a problem against the Chargers, whose WRs are notorious for dropping passes.
Los Angeles Chargers vs. Detroit Lions Prediction
Our pick is Detroit. We think the Lions will win the 2025 Hall of Fame game without any major problems. They’re superior to the Chargers in practically every aspect of the game, so anything but an easy win on the last day of July would be a surprise.
Pick: Detroit Lions
