Can Inter Miami Do Anything Without Lionel Messi?
After two rounds of the 2025 Leagues Cup, Inter Miami have 5 points. That’s because they won 3 by beating Atlas 2:1 in the first round. Then, in the second round, they got themselves 2 points by beating Nexaca on penalties after a 2:2 draw in regulation.
Everyone expected them to steamroll Nexaca, but they struggled a lot, mainly because their key player, Lionel Messi, picked up an injury early on in the match. He was substituted in the 11th minute after injuring his thigh. As per coach Javier Mascherano, it’s not a big injury, but he will almost certainly miss the August 6 game.

This won’t be the first time this year that he’s out for Inter Miami. He missed the game with FC Cincinnati in July, and his team failed to score – it was 0:0 in the end. He also missed the game with FC Dallas in April, and his team lost 4:3.
The Herons did do well without him in March when he missed three games in a row, but they managed to win each of those. Does this mean they can cope without the soccer GOAT? Maybe they can, especially now that his fellow Argentine, Rodrigo de Paul, has arrived. The former Atletico Madrid midfielder has been great since coming to America, even recording two assists in the game with Nexaca.
UNAM Pumas are Always Fun to Watch
UNAM Pumas might not be the best Mexican team in 2025, but they are loved by neutrals. Soccer fans love these guys because their games are always fun to watch. They score a lot but also concede a lot.
In the 2025 Leagues Cup, we saw them beat Orlando City by penalties after 1:1 in regulation. Then, they beat Atlanta United 3:2 in the second round. They did win, but they lost their goalkeeper, Kaylor Navas.
The former PSG goalie got red-carded against Atlanta and will miss the Inter Miami game because of that. This could be a huge problem for the Mexicans as their backup keeper, 17-year-old Rodrigo Parra Arteaga, probably won’t be able to stop Luis Suarez & Co.
Inter Miami vs. UNAM Pumas Prediction
We think this is going to be a spectacle for the fans, with goals on both ends. Still, our prediction is that Inter Miami will be the team to score (at least one goal) more. Even without Messi, the Herons look better than Pumas.
