Gambler Assaults Partner after €2.5K Loss at Casino de Monte-Carlo
After the violent act, the man was sentenced to a six-month custodial sentence and banned from Monaco for five years
Every gambler likes to win, especially when visiting a brick-and-mortar casino. While everybody loves winning, nobody likes losing. Losses often have a detrimental impact on the well-being of some gamblers, which may even push them to lose control.
This is precisely the case of one gambler in his forties who was banned from Monaco and hit with a six-month custodial sentence after assaulting his partner at a casino.
The criminal case dates back to March 23, 2024, when a couple visited the Casino de Monte-Carlo in Monaco. The 41-year-old man, who assaulted his partner at the casino was a gambling addict, the Monaco Tribune reports.
A prosecutor recognized that the man’s actions came after he “blew a fuse because he was a gambling addict.” For the assault against his partner, the 41-year-old man from Nice was sentenced by the Principality’s criminal court to a six-month custodial sentence. He was also banned from Monaco for a period of five years.
An investigation into the man uncovered that he had a lengthy criminal record. Allegedly, the 41-year-old used different identities and has been convicted of a range of criminal activities, including drunk driving, drug possession, violent acts and smuggling.
Once the victim was questioned, she confirmed that it wasn’t the first time the 41-year-old man had hit her. She claimed that while walking around Nice, the man assaulted her, but the violent act was interrupted by law enforcement.
The victim also alleged that she was subject to death threats by the 41-year-old. Although he denied that allegation, he didn’t contest the other claims made by the victim.
A Violent Assault on the Casino Floor
The violent crime occurred during a visit at the Casino de Monte-Carlo. This wasn’t the best night for the problem gambler who lost approximately €2,500 ($2,700) at the time.
Chasing his losses, the 41-year-old asked his partner to loan him some cash. He wanted €2,000 ($2,200) from the victim as he planned to continue gambling and earn back his money. When the woman denied giving her partner the money, he struck her.
What’s more, the 41-year-old held the woman by her throat and pushed her to a wall. In light of the incident, a guard at the Monte-Carlo Casino had to intervene. After the assault, the woman sustained injuries and had to take time off work.
