Embezzlement of Over $700K Lands Dotty’s Ex-Employee a 30-Year Prison Sentence

After confessing to robbing several Dotty’s locations and to stealing over $700,000 an ex-employee has been sentenced

A former employee of Dotty’s has received a 30-year prison sentence after confessing to embezzlement.

61-year-old Thomas Tonar, from Sun Valley, had illegally obtained more than $700,000 while working for them. The perks offered to a full-time employee of Dotty’s are quite lucrative; they include PTO, a 410K and health insurance.

On four acts of embezzling more than $100,000, Tomar was given 20 consecutive years in prison. In addition, he will spend 2 to 10 years more for embezzlement of less than $100,000. The time that Tonar will spend in prison is between 8 to 30.

After serving the first 8, he will become eligible for parole. The information on Tonar’s sentencing was released by the Washoe County District Attorney’s Office.

The sentence of Tonar was handed down by the Honorable Barry Breslow.

A Slip-up That Has Cost Everyone

After discovering that one of their employees had been stealing from the casino, the management at Dotty’s called in two police departments, from Sparks and from Reno.

Footage was discovered where Tonar can be seen taking money from multiple Dotty’s casinos. No information has been given on why Tonar had access to the place where the money was being held.

Working with the accounting departments of Dotty’s, the police were able to calculate that Tonar had stolen a total of $714,713.59.

Those affected by Tonar’s crimes have shared that since then, they have been faced with many difficulties, many having fallen behind on payments for rent and mortgages.

A Manhunt Ensues, with Tonar Finally Caught

A police search found Tonar hiding out in a motel in Sacramento, California. Along with local California law enforcement, an arrest warrant was executed. Police found Tonar with a bag full of stolen money that amounted to around $670 thousand.

At the motel, alongside the money they also discovered three firearms. Tonar has not provided a clear reason as to why he undertook these actions, as he should have been aware of the security precautions taken by Dotty’s.

He later confessed to stealing money from six different Dotty’s casinos.
