Australian Gaming Billionaire Faces Expanded Drug Case
Police say the new accusations arise from a home search that allegedly uncovered sizable amounts of ketamine, MDMA, and cocaine
Australian tech entrepreneur Laurence Escalante has been hit with a fresh set of drug-related allegations, widening the criminal case already underway against him in Perth.
Gaming Billionaire Faces 17 Charges After New Drug Allegations
The 44-year-old founder of Virtual Gaming Worlds (VGW) appeared again before the Perth Magistrates Court, where prosecutors outlined nine additional counts tied to alleged possession of illegal and controlled substances. The new accusations bring the total number of charges against him to 17, combining drug offences with earlier claims that include burglary, theft, assault, and repeated domestic violence, reported The Australian Financial Review.
Authorities say the latest charges stem from evidence collected during a police search of the businessman’s home. Investigators claim they discovered quantities of ketamine, MDMA, and cocaine considered large enough to raise concerns about potential supply, along with prescription medications allegedly held without lawful authority.
The search followed an incident in late January involving Escalante’s former partner. According to court materials, he is accused of forcing his way into the woman’s residence, confronting her, and removing luxury belongings he had given her earlier. The confrontation escalated into a physical struggle that left the woman with visible injuries. Police later reported recovering jewelry and other valuables from a safe at the entrepreneur’s property.
High-Stakes Court Fight Could Put Gaming Mogul’s Fortune at Risk
Escalante has not entered pleas and is expected to challenge the accusations. Through his legal team, he has sought adjustments to his bail terms, arguing for fewer reporting requirements and changes to movement restrictions. The court maintained strict conditions, including limits on travel, after he posted a substantial personal undertaking to remain free while proceedings continue.
The case has also drawn attention because of potential financial implications. Under the confiscation regime in Western Australia, authorities can move to seize assets linked to serious drug crimes even if those holdings were not generated through illegal activity. Legal experts note that such provisions could expose a large portion of Escalante’s multibillion-dollar fortune if prosecutors succeed in proving trafficking-level offences.
Meanwhile, his company confirmed earlier that he has stepped back from executive duties, with senior leadership assuming operational control while the legal process unfolds.Escalante is scheduled to return to court in mid-June when the matter is expected to move further into preliminary proceedings.
