Arizona’s September Betting Report Outlines Mixed Results

In addition to marking a decrease of almost 50% from the prior-year period, the revenue figure for the month was the lowest monthly total since July 2022

The Arizona Department of Gaming has published its latest monthly sports wagering report, highlighting a decrease in revenue despite a double-digit increase in sports betting handle. The department added that, in September, the market continued to be dominated by FanDuel.

Arizona’s Recorded Strong Handle, Weaker Revenue

According to the Department of Gaming, sports betting operators in Arizona recorded a 16.3% increase in handle for September. Official figures show that the total player spending reached a staggering $851.3 million, marking one of the biggest monthly figures on record.

For context, players bet $4.4 million on retail sports betting and $847 million on online platforms, highlighting the continued prevalence of mobile wagering.

Despite the increase in handle, Arizona’s sportsbooks experienced a decrease in revenue. After paying back $794.3 million to the players, operators were left with adjusted gross receipts before deductions of almost $55 million. The latter figure marked a 28.9% decrease year-on-year due to outcomes favoring the players.

Additional data from the Department of Gaming suggests deductions of $35.4 million in free bets and promotional credits. This left the Arizona sports betting industry with adjusted revenue of $19.6 million for September.

In addition to marking a decrease of almost 50% from the prior-year period, the revenue figure was the lowest monthly total since July 2022.

For further context, retail sportsbooks reported revenue of $992.7K, while their online counterparts’ revenue reached $18.6 million.

FanDuel Dominated the Market

The biggest winner was FanDuel, which turned a handle of $254.5 million into revenue of $8.5 million.

Despite recording the highest online betting handle for the month at $268.2 million, DraftKings lagged behind in terms of revenue with $3.6 million in mobile betting revenue and $681.9K in retail revenue.

BetMGM secured itself the third spot on the list with online revenue of $3.9 million from a handle of $97.7 million, and retail revenue of $288.4K from a handle of $592.6K.
