Reasons Why Serbia is the EuroBasket 2025 Favorite (And Should It Be?)?

Serbia’s coach is Svetislav Pešić, a coaching expert who led the former Yugoslavia (Serbia + Montenegro) to the FIBA World Title in Indianapolis in 2022. He also won the EuroBasket twice, in 1993 with Germany and in 2001 with Yugoslavia.

The coach is turning 76 the day after the opening ceremony of the 2025 EuroBasket, which means that he probably won’t remain Serbia’s coach after this tournament. In fact, many believe that this tournament is his “last dance.” This explains why practically all of Serbia’s biggest stars have accepted his invite to take part in the tourney.

The biggest name on the roster is, obviously, Nikola Jokić, who’s probably the best center on the planet. The problem is that he might not be battle-ready yet. He’s been in Serbia for a while now, and there’s plenty of footage of him eating, drinking, and taking part in harness racing.

Plus, Jokić has some family troubles lately. His uncle got arrested in a big anti-corruption action. He’s a part of a group that’s suspected to have embezzled 115 million during the reconstruction of a train station – that later collapsed and killed 16 people.

But Serbia’s national team isn’t a one-man army. In addition to Jokić, they also have Bogdan Bogdanović, Nikola Jović, and others.

Who Could Ruin Serbia’s EuroBasket Dreams?

In addition to Serbia, there are only two other national teams with EuroBasket 2025 odds shorter than +1000. Those are, namely, Germany and France.

  • Germany (+450) – This team finished in third place in the previous edition of the EuroBasket. Most of the players who led them to the bronze medal are still on the roster, but they’re more experienced now. Among those are Orlando Magic’s stars, Franz Wagner and Tristan Da Silva, as well as Sacramento Kings’ Dennis Schröder.
  • France (+500) – The San Antonio Spurs superstar Victor Wembanyama won’t feature in the EuroBasket 2025, but despite that, France remains the team with the most NBA players (6). The French have a very young team this year, with captain Guerschon Yabusele being one of few players that lead France to the No. 2 place in the last edition of EuroBasket. But youngsters like Atlanta’s Zaccharie Risacher and Washington’s Bilal Coulibaly are hungry for success.

In addition to these two, we also mustn’t forget to mention the defending champion, Spain, as well as Giannis Antetokounmpo-led Greece and Luka Doncic’s Slovenia. There’s also Italy, which looks like one of the best longshot bets, mainly because this is the team that knocked out Serbia last time around.

EuroBasket 2025 Prediction

Serbia is, by far, the best team in the 2025 EuroBasket, and it’s not just because of Jokić. They have another four NBA players, as well as several EuroLeague superstars. Most importantly, they have an experienced coach to lead them to glory.

Our prediction is that they’ll start slow, possibly even disappointing in the first couple of games. But once they realize that gold is within reach, they’ll switch to the top gear.

Pick: Serbia
