USPS Courier Nicks $2,600 Lottery Ticket – Gets in Trouble

A USPS mail carrier in Florida has been arrested on charges of stealing a winning lottery ticket for the Pick 4 lottery game, the Florida Lottery confirmed on Friday, July 31.

USPS Gets Lawful Retribution Over Alleged $2,600 Petty Theft

The woman, identified as Lekaysha Lockhart, had been arrested before the date of the announcement, Thursday, July 23, and booked on charges of grand theft, filing a false claim for payment, unlawful use of a two-way communication device, mail theft, and dealing in stolen property. 

The amount Lockhart allegedly stole is a measly $2,600 in lottery winnings that was, in fact, successfully claimed by the courier, the Florida Lottery says. The amount was claimed on June 19, 2026, at the Florida Lottery’s Miami office, and the win was scored in the Pick 4 game. 

Any prize that exceeds $600 can only be reclaimed at an official venue of the Florida Lottery, usually an office or the headquarters. The investigation was launched after the original lottery winner complained that the ticket had been mailed, but it had never reached its destination. 

In the course of the investigation, Lockhart allegedly admitted to officers that she had indeed stolen the ticket and claimed it under pretenses. 

The investigators found out that on June 15, a person went to a Publix in Tampa and identified the ticket as a winner. 

Florida Lottery Acts Swiftly in Establishing the Suspected Culprit

No official confirmation has come as to who the person was and whether it was Lockhart herself. Commenting on the case, Florida Lottery Secretary Reginald D. Dixon had this to say:

“Our players deserve confidence that every Lottery prize is protected through strong security measures and diligent oversight.”

Dixon commended the Division of Security and the fact that investigators were able to detect the fraud, in collaboration with the United States Postal Service Office of Inspector General and the Broward County Sheriff’s Office.

These collective efforts mean that the lottery’s integrity is safeguarded against fraud and manipulation, and that any person finding themselves in a situation to abuse the integrity of the game would face repercussions, Dixon elaborated.
