Powerball Tops $500M Prize Pool Once Again

The Powerball is back in the news again – or, perhaps, it has never left. One of America’s biggest lottery draws has just become even more impressive with the jackpot crossing the $500-million threshold.

Following the Monday drawing, jackpot-slash-millionaire hopefuls would now have $503 million to look forward to for the next draw. Commenting on this exciting news, the NC Education Lottery chief executive officer, Mark Michalko, had this to say ahead of Monday’s drawing:

“A chance to win a jackpot worth more than half a billion dollars is something that doesn’t happen very often. What a moment that would be if some lucky North Carolinian could take home that prize tonight.”

However, nobody won the Monday prize draw, with people now having another chance to secure the life-altering amount on Wednesday or, failing that, Saturday this week. Powerball prizes are known to drop fairly frequently despite the 1 in 292.2 million odds of actually winning.

The most recent win came on May 31, when one player won $205 million. Before that, another player scooped up $167 million on April 26. The new prize pool once again suggests that Powerball’s jackpot could be on a steady upward trajectory. The game’s jackpot has exceeded the $1-billion threshold only five times historically, so every time the jackpot begins to build up like that, speculation swirls.
