NFL Bans Cardinals Scout Director Over Gambling Dispute

The NFL has suspended Arizona Cardinals executive Ryan Gold indefinitely after an investigation into alleged violations of the league’s strict gambling rules. The decision, announced late last week, involves accusations that Gold provided sensitive team information and engaged in prohibited betting activities.

The league found that Gold was accused of sharing non-public information about Arizona’s selections in the 2026 draft prior to their public announcement, reported the Associated Press. Investigators also learned he was placing parlay bets on professional and college football games. There was no evidence that game results were compromised, the NFL said, but it called a breach of its betting policy a serious matter. 

League rules expressly forbid employees from gambling on sports or passing on confidential information that could be used for gambling. These guidelines are routinely reviewed with staff across all teams, consistent with the NFL’s broader effort to protect the integrity of the game as legalized betting continues to grow across the United States. 

The Cardinals organization supported the league’s decision, saying expectations for employees have been clearly defined and communicated. Officials with the team said the matter involves one person and does not affect plans for the upcoming season, with training camp scheduled to open soon. 

Cardinals Scout Chief Appeals NFL Ban, Denies Allegations

Gold, who had been with the Cardinals’ scouting department for more than a decade, worked his way up to director of college scouting by 2025. His responsibilities included player evaluations, overseeing scouting personnel, and coordinating draft preparations. 

However, the case is far from settled. Gold’s legal representative has strongly denied the allegations and confirmed an appeal is in progress. The lawyer said the charges were baseless and expected the suspension to be lifted in due course. 

Gold’s lawyer, defending him, said the betting the league was talking about may have been done by his wife, who apparently made small informal bets with friends. They also said that Gold would not have known about final draft decisions at the time, rebutting the idea that he could have leaked accurate insider information. 

Reports indicated the NFL’s review included interviews and analysis of digital records, with no suggestion other members of the Cardinals organization were involved. Gold has the right to appeal the suspension through the league’s appeal process.
