A player from Dunedin, New Zealand, has much to be happy about after the person secured an NZD 10.05 million ($5.9 million) payout from the country’s Powerball Must Be Won draw. While details about the winner are scant, there are a few things that are known about the lucky victor.

New Zealand Winner Scoops the Payout of a Lifetime

The person bought their ticket on MyLotto. Commenting on the win, Lotto NZ chief executive Jason Delamore welcomed the important event and said that the entire lottery was extremely happy for the lucky winner.

“This is a life-changing win for them and their family,” he acknowledged without divulging any other personal details. But this is not all, because there were other winners in the same draw, with five lucky souls grabbing an NZD 200,000 share of Lotto First Division.

“We scheduled this Must Be Won draw now so that we can reset our Powerball jackpot next week and ensure it is at a manageable level as we press the accelerator and drive full steam ahead with our technology upgrade on 29 September,” Delamore added.

Changes Coming to New Zealand’s Lottery, iGaming Framework

New Zealand’s lottery system is undergoing several important changes over the next weeks, with the Lotto, Powerball, and Strike competitions all to be added onto a single paper ticket, along with new big screen terminals in physical locations.

New Zealand is similarly pushing forward with plans to introduce regulated online casinos with 15-odd licenses to be available to potential applicants. The proposal has been met with stiff opposition, arguing that expanding gambling would bring more harm than it would good.
