Nevada stands on the brink of putting a new law into action that aims to boost the state’s power to fight illegal gambling. Senator Rochelle Nguyen brought Senate Bill 256 (SB 256) to the table earlier this year. Now, both legislative chambers have given it their full backing. The bill just needs a final nod before it lands on Governor Joe Lombardo‘s desk for his approval.

Nevada Legislature Unanimously Backs Tougher Measures on Illegal Gambling

The bill, which got a 42-0 yes vote in the Assembly after a 20-0 approval in the Senate, aims to strengthen Nevada’s control over illegal physical gambling spots and unlicensed online businesses. A small change in procedure, adding Assemblymember Brittney Miller as a co-sponsor, means it needs to go back to the Senate for agreement, a step that should not face any pushback.

If it becomes law, SB 256 will cause a revolution in the state’s fight against illegal gambling. It brings in tough punishments, even felony charges, for those who break the law. What is more, it gives Nevada the power to go after operators outside the state if they take bets from people in Nevada. This aims to tackle the rise of offshore and unregulated online casinos that operate in legal gray areas.

The bill also says that money made from illegal gambling, whether in person or online, must be given to the state. This cash will go into Nevada’s General Fund to help pay for public services and regulatory systems.

Nevada Strengthens Regulations to Combat Billions Lost to Illegal Online Betting

The new law comes as people worry more about illegal betting websites that often fly under the radar of US gambling rules. At a hearing, Janice Wong, who works for Sen. Nguyen as an intern, spoke up. She said these sites not only dodge rules but also put users at risk and hurt the state’s legal gambling business.

Numbers from the industry show how big this problem is. The American Gaming Association says that in 2024 illegal online casinos handled bets worth over $400 billion. This led to legal US operators losing more than $17 billion in income.

SB 256 has backing from important players in the industry like the Nevada Gaming Control Board, the Association of Gaming Equipment Manufacturers, and the Nevada Resort Association. Those who support it say the bill is crucial to keep Nevada‘s reputation as a well-regulated gaming center and to stop players from using illegal alternatives.

When it is finished, the new law will send a clear message: working outside the state’s rules will lead to big legal and financial problems.
