A Reggio Calabria court found no evidence of organized crime involvement regarding Betsolution Ltd and its directors in their Malta operations. This concludes Italy’s long-running “Operazione Gambling” case, which has been investigating the company for several years.
Court Acquits Betsolution Ltd of Mafia Links
On June 30, a panel of three judges delivered its verdict, officially filed on July 5, acquitting company directors Domenico Lagrotteria and Alessandro Ciaffi of charges including mafia association, money laundering, and operating illegal gambling services. Prosecutors had claimed that Betsolution’s white-label sportsbook operations, run from Malta and Italy, were used to launder money for the Tegano clan.
The investigation, which commenced in 2015, resulted in high-profile arrests in both Malta and Italy, as well as the suspension of Betsolution’s B2B licence in Malta by the Malta Gaming Authority. Betsolution operated through a network of Italian agents and collaborators, including Vincenzo Giuliano, Mario Vardè, and poker software provider Davide Taher.
All three were acquitted. At the time, the company’s representative office in Malta was managed by GVM Holding, a corporate services firm owned by lawyer David Gonzi. Out of the 23 individuals charged, only two were convicted: Antonino Alvaro received a 10-year prison sentence, while Cristian Fortunato was sentenced to seven years.
During the initial phase of the 2015 investigation, authorities froze hundreds of related betting websites and seized servers located in Malta and Italy. However, the court concluded that Betsolution was operating as a legitimate gaming business and that prosecutors had failed to demonstrate the use of a “mafia method,” a key requirement for convictions under Italian anti-mafia laws.
The company had conducted its activities entirely under Malta’s remote gaming framework, with its use of cross-border servers deemed standard industry practice rather than an attempt at concealment.
