What to Expect from the Cowboys After a Poor 2024 Season?
The Cowboys stumbled to a 7–10 record in 2024, finishing 3rd in the NFC East. As a result, they failed to advance to the postseason for the first time since 2020.
Last season was defined by defensive breakdowns and costly injuries. Dak Prescott’s season-ending hamstring injury in Week 9 was the knockout blow, but even before that, he was far from his best. Before the injury, he posted just 1,978 yards, 11 touchdowns, and 8 picks – all with career-low efficiency.
Offensively, Dallas managed only 350 points (20.6 per game), ranking 21st in the league. Those are bad numbers, but their defense was even worse, surrendering 468 points (27.5 per game) – the second-worst mark in the league.
The run defense, in particular, remains a major liability for Brian Schottenheimer’s team. Last season, the Cowboys were near the bottom in both rushing yards allowed and yards per carry. We don’t think that defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus has found the fix yet.
Philadelphia Eagles Eager to Get Action Going
Run defense is the Cowboys’ Achilles heel, and to make things even worse, running the ball is what the Eagles do best. It’s powered by Saquon Barkley’s record-breaking season and one of the NFL’s most dominant offensive lines.
But Barkley isn’t the only one who can shred defenses on the ground. Super Bowl MVP Jalen Hurts is an elite runner in his own right. And it’s not just by quarterback standards but also compared to any offensive player in the league.
He’s already racked up 55 rushing touchdowns in his career, the third-most ever for a QB, trailing only Josh Allen (65) and Cam Newton (75).
Dallas Cowboys vs. Philadelphia Eagles Week 1 Prediction
Our Cowboys vs. Eagles prediction is that the defending champions of the NFL will win. Not only that, but we expect the boys from Philly to demolish Dallas with their incredibly rushing game. That said, we’re almost 100% certain they’ll cover the spread in Week 1.
Pick: Philadelphia Eagles -7
