A woman from New York has just had her life turned around by winning $1,000,000 from the lottery. 

Latest $1M Lottery Winner Opts for the Lump Sum

The win occurred on the aptly named $1,000,000 Bonus Cashword scratch-off game, and will now see Velma James of Brooklyn have the chance to use the resulting six-figure payout in which way she likes. 

The winner opted for the lump sum payment, $405,034, and bought her ticket at 317 Marcus Garvey Liquors in Brooklyn, scooping one of the last few available prizes before the game is phased out.

There is only one top prize remaining for the $1,000,000 Bonus Cashword game remaining, before the lottery withdraws it. 

Scratch-off games have been particularly popular with players, generating more than $4,339,794,048 in total sales in the fiscal year 2024-2025 alone, and the money goes to support school districts across five boroughs from the Lottery Aid to Education fund.

No further details were released about James’ win.
