Why are Austen Lane’s UFC Nashville Odds So Long (+500)?
Austen Lane is a former football player who played as a defensive end for the Jacksonville Jaguars and several other teams from 2010 to 2015. Then, he switched to MMA, and his record since is 13-6-1.
The trouble is that since joining the UFC in 2023, he’s got just one win. This happened against Robelis Despaigne whom he defeated by decision. Before that, we saw Lane get KO-ed by Justin Tafa and Jhonata Diniz. And after the win over the big Cuban, Lane got KO-ed again – Mario Pinto did this to him last March.
With three KO losses in his last four fights, it’s no surprise that he’s seen as a major underdog. But we think that he’s learned his lesson from those defeats.
In the fight with Pinto, he did great in the first round but then decided to forget about strategy and aim for a knockout. This wasn’t a smart decision as it allowed Pinto to find a way to land a devastating KO punch.
Victor Petrino Making His UFC Heavyweight Debut
Victor Petrino is 11-2 with both of those losses happening in his last two fights. First, he lost to Anthony Smith by submission; then, Dustin Jacoby beat him by a KO. After those defeats, he decided to move to another division – from Light Heavyweight, he switched to Heavyweight.
We’re not sure if this is actually a good decision. He’s three inches shorter than his first Heavyweight opponent and is almost 40 pounds lighter. While he was a powerful force in the Light Heavyweight Division, we’re not sure if he’s got the power to knock out such a big guy as Lane.
Another reason why we think bookmakers are crazy to give -700 odds on this guy is that he had some problems with his elbows a few months back. Actually, his fight with Jhonata Diniz – which was supposed to happen in March – was canceled after he was diagnosed with lateral epicondylitis (a.k.a. tennis elbow) in both elbows.
This condition usually takes about six weeks to treat, after which it takes a few more weeks for a fighter to get back in top shape. What this means is that he probably wasn’t at 100% during the camp.
Austen Lane vs. Victor Petrino Prediction
Austen Lane’s UFC contract was extended earlier this year (before the loss to Pinto), so his job is safe. But he almost certainly won’t have a bright future in the organization if he gets knocked out again. This is why his priority in the UFC Nashville fight is to avoid getting hit hard.
Our prediction is that he will fight smart – the way he did in Round 1 of the Pinto fight – landing body shots and kicks with the intention to win over the judges. Will he pull it off? We think he might and with UFC Nashville odds of +500, this is a pick we can’t resist.
